Unveiling the Heart's Spaciousness: My Personal Journey into Mindfulness

Unveiling the Heart's Spaciousness: My Personal Journey into Mindfulness

In the whirlwind of our modern, technology-driven lives, losing touch with our inner selves is easy. We're often so engrossed in the hustle and bustle of daily life that we forget to pause, breathe, and truly experience the present moment. But what if there was a way to tap into the spaciousness of your heart, find tranquillity amidst the chaos, and live a life of greater purpose and fulfilment? This is the power of Mindfulness, a concept that I, Julian Jenkins, have spent years studying, practising, and teaching.

The Journey to Mindfulness

Mindfulness is about being fully present, fully aware, and fully engaged in the here and now. It's about experiencing life as it unfolds without judgment or distraction. As I often say, "Mindfulness is not just a practice, but a way of life. It's a tool that allows us to navigate the complexities of our world with grace, Compassion, and wisdom."

Embracing Our Life's Purpose

One of the key themes in Mindfulness is the concept of our life's purpose, or what I like to call our "karmic assignment." This is the unique role that each of us is meant to play in the grand tapestry of life. It's about asking ourselves: "What is my purpose in this particular moment? What am I truly passionate about? What would I love so much that I'd pay to do it?"

Our karmic assignment isn't about finding thought-driven answers but about resting in the not-knowing underneath thinking altogether. It's about being open to the possibilities, willing to explore, and brave enough to step into the unknown. As I often remind my students, "The most powerful awareness of all is not knowing and not being afraid of that not knowing but being really interested in it."

The Beauty of Being Human

One of the most beautiful aspects of Mindfulness is the recognition of our shared humanity. We are all part of a larger whole, interconnected and interdependent. We are called to take care of what needs to be taken care of, not for ourselves, but for all beings. As I like to say, "We are all part of the one body of the planet, the one body politic of the country, the society, the city, the community, the town. We are called to take care of what needs to be taken care of, not for ourselves, but for all beings."

The Power of Compassion

Compassion is at the heart of Mindfulness. It's about widening our circle of Compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature in its beauty. It's about striving for such achievement, which is part of liberation and the foundation for inner security. As I often say, "Compassion is not just a feeling, but a call to action. It's about recognising the suffering of others and doing what we can to alleviate it."

The Beauty of the Present Moment

Mindfulness invites us to rest in the silence of the present moment, full and pregnant with infinite potential. Every moment is an opportunity to show up and live into what our karmic assignment is at this moment. The most powerful awareness of all is not knowing and not being afraid of that not knowing, but being really interested in it.

A Guided Meditation

Now, I'd like to guide you through a simple mindfulness meditation. This is a practice that I often use in my own life and that I've found to be incredibly beneficial for my students.

Begin by finding a comfortable position. You can sit on a chair or on the floor, or you can lie down.

If that's more comfortable for you. Close your eyes and take a few deep breaths. Feel the air entering your lungs, filling them with life-giving oxygen, and then leaving your body, carrying away any tension or stress.

Now, bring your attention to your heart. Imagine it as a vast, open space filled with light and warmth. This is the spaciousness of your heart, the place where your true self resides.

As you breathe in, imagine this light and warmth expanding, filling your entire body. As you breathe, imagine this light and warmth radiating from you, touching everyone and everything around you.

Now, ask yourself: "What is my karmic assignment at this particular moment?" Don't try to find an answer. Just let the question sit there in the spaciousness of your heart. Let it be a beacon, guiding you towards your true purpose.

Continue to breathe, feeling the light and warmth of your heart expanding and radiating out with each breath. Stay with this practice for as long as you like.

When you're ready, gently bring your attention back to your physical surroundings. Open your eyes and take a moment to notice how you feel. Remember, every moment is an opportunity to tap into your heart's spaciousness, live into your karmic assignment, and embrace the beauty of the present moment.

Conclusion

In our fast-paced, technology-driven world, losing touch with our inner selves is easy. But through Mindfulness, we can tap into the spaciousness of our hearts, find peace amidst the chaos, and live a life of greater purpose and fulfilment. As I often say, "The journey to Mindfulness is not a destination, but a path we walk daily. It's about showing up, being present, and embracing the beauty of each moment."

I invite you to join me on this journey. Let's walk this path together, supporting, learning from, and growing together. Let's tap into the spaciousness of our hearts, live into our karmic assignments, and embrace the beauty of the present moment. Because, in the end, that's what life is all about.

"Compassion is at the heart of Mindfulness" - this is an absolutely beautiful sentence......... I am sure my Karmic Assignment presently is taking care of animals........ but why can't humans HELP?! I see this particular religious sect (who are the animal guardians) in 'Heaven', sitting together, rather quietly in retrospection. Every once in a while I see one of them throw their hands up in some kind of prayer move............. They realize when they have passed that they did not treat the animals well, but just don't get it here on earth. So I must help with compassion........ TY as always, Julian!
